A yellow weather warning has been issued for Greater Manchester.

Snow and sleet have already reached parts of the region and are expected to continue to fall through Friday evening.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow, sleet and rain from now until 9 p.m.

Motorists are warned of difficult driving conditions with an increased risk of collisions.

Meteorologists say the rain will turn into winter showers tonight and continue into the night, falling harder on the Pennines.

This week’s cold spell will persist tonight with temperatures lows of 1 ° C.

The yellow alert states: “The current precipitation area in this region is expected to move slowly, with snow falling through higher routes (above 300 m), and with the possibility of more intense gusts bringing the snow. temporarily accumulated at about 100 m above sea level.

“Accumulations are not expected to exceed a few centimeters and will often be transient.

“As the precipitation subsides later today, and the warm air mixes more and more, any winter elements will eventually be confined to the higher ground tonight, where impacts are less likely.”

Snowfall has already caused disruption in the Northwest today.

Two main routes between Manchester and Sheffield were closed as a result of the snow, causing vehicles to be stranded at Snake Pass.

Both the A57 Snake Pass and Woodhead Pass were closed due to dangerous conditions.

The weekend, however, will see brighter weather and even some sunshine with temperatures warming up on Saturday.

The first shoots of rain will disappear by mid-morning
