Max Verstappen has revealed that, after seeing Romain Grosjean’s accident, he called his family before the race started again.
The Bahrain Grand Prix received a red flag on the first lap after Grosjean’s terrible accident, in which his car broke through barriers and split in half, causing a large fire.
Surprisingly, he got out of there largely unscathed, but the footage from the incident was very distressing.
Verstappen has said that if he were a team manager, he would fire any driver who said he didn’t want to complete the race, but the crash affected him enough to call his family during the stop.
“The Grosjean accident was fierce. I was face to face with my father and my sister, I chatted and sent some messages, ”he said in your website.
“When the red flag was flown and we were still on our way to the pit lane, we saw the flames. That was the worst moment. At the time, he didn’t know what had happened or if he was still out of the car.
“Once we got to the pit lane, we had seen on the screen that Grosjean had jumped out of the car. Then you know that, fortunately, it is relatively good.
“Crashes happen, which of course is not pleasant. This was a huge success that you hope never happens. “

Grosjean’s survival was due in large part to the security measures put in place by the sport, from the introduction of the halo to the medical personnel on site.
Verstappen wasn’t a fan of the former when it was added to the cars, but he’s grateful for it now.
“When I saw the flames it was pretty scary to watch, but luckily of course he jumped out of the car himself and that was the most important thing. You can really see the safety, how much it has improved, ”said the Dutchman after the race.
“I think today’s Halo also saved his life. At first when it came to the cars he was quite critical about it, which looked ugly but nothing can be said about safety because today he definitely saved Romain, very happy about it.
“The thoughts are with him and, of course, also with his family, because they are watching in front of the television and that is never pleasant. So I hope he recovers very soon and returns with us. “
