The actor formerly known as Ellen Page has announced that he is transgender and now goes by the name Elliot.
The star, known for starring in the hit movies Juno and Inception, posted a lengthy statement on Twitter.
It said: “I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he / they and my name is Elliot.”
“I feel fortunate to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life,” the statement added.
“I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me throughout this journey.
“I can’t begin to express how extraordinary it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”
Following the announcement, the actor changed his name on Twitter and quickly received huge support from fellow artists Mia Farrow and Patricia Arquette, as well as thousands of fans.
Page, 33, said her “joy is real, but also fragile.”
“The truth is that, despite feeling deeply happy at this moment and knowing how privileged I am, I am also afraid,” he said.
“I am afraid of invasiveness, hatred, ‘jokes’ and violence.
“To be clear, I’m not trying to curb a moment that is joyous and celebratory, but I want to tackle the big picture. The statistics are staggering.
“Discrimination against trans people is pervasive, insidious and cruel, with dire consequences.”
Addressing the trans community, Page said he will “do whatever he can to change this world for the better.”
Page added: “I love being trans. And I love being queer.
“And the more I hug myself and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I prosper.”
