The winner of the MANCHESTER UNITED match, Edinson Cavani, faces a possible three-match suspension for a “racist” comment after the match.
The FA disciplinary peaks launched an investigation into the Instagram post after the Uruguayan scored twice to lead Manchester United to a 3-2 comeback after they lost 2-0 at Southampton.
Cavani’s response to a fan on Instagram sparked a backlash on social media, with some labeling her language as racist.
A fan posted ‘Asi te queiro Matador’ in Spanish, which translates to: “I love you, Matador!”
Cavani replied on his Instagram story: “Thank you N ******!”
The Spanish word is said to mean ‘little nigger’ and the 33-year-old striker later deleted the image from his Instagram story.
It seems certain that his answer will bring at least one charge and a warning from the FA, and potentially a suspension of a “minimum” of three games.
Former Liverpool forward Luis Suárez, Cavani’s attacking partner for Uruguay, received an eight-game penalty for using the same word in his on-field clash with United’s Patrice Evra in 2011.
The FA launched a new crackdown on discriminatory conduct in August, following social media comment bans issued to Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and Tottenham’s Dele Alli.
Under the new guidelines, the FA must act when “discriminatory” language has been used.
The FA rules, sent to all clubs and players, through the PFA, state: “When an offense is made only in writing or through any communication device, the absolute minimum penalty based on the match in such cases will be of three games “.
United declined to comment when contacted by SunSport, but they are understood to believe the comments were made in an affectionate context.
Old Trafford bosses pointed to the supposedly widespread use of the term in South America, although they confirmed that Cavani would now be aware that it could be misinterpreted.
However, that position is unlikely to find favor with the FA, which believes it is vital that they punish everyone and any discriminatory language.
Wembley bosses began their investigation when they learned of the comments and now have until the close of Wednesday to decide whether to charge or contact Cavani for his comments.
The FA would then have until next Monday to issue the charge, and a hearing will be scheduled before December 21, with a commission to determine any necessary punishment.
But while Cavani didn’t join United until September, the crackdown applies to all players and United will fear the loss of their new attacking star for the Christmas show.
Suarez was fined £ 40,000 by the FA for his use of the word n ******, but later wrote in his autobiography that it has a different meaning in Spanish.
It translates into Spanish as ‘little black man’ and is not typically used as a derogatory insult.
