Police have said there are no excuses for violating Covid-19 laws after being called in to break up a 200-person rave at a college residence.

Shocking footage showed large crowds dancing to loud music before heading out to the front of the aisles to continue the party.

Nottinghamshire police said officers were unable to arrest anyone as the crowd dispersed when they arrived, but were still investigating.

The force said in a statement: “Investigations are also ongoing after officers dispersed a gathering of about 200 youths in an outdoor courtyard at a student residence on St Peter’s Street, Nottingham.”

Police said party-goers in Nottinghamshire had their nights ‘disrupted’ on Saturday, as officers also addressed several other illegal gatherings and issued multiple fines.

The force said: ‘Officers were called to an apartment in Pilcher Gate, Nottingham, shortly before 10.30pm last night and issued notices of fixed fines of £ 200 to 21 people found inside.

“Investigations are underway to establish the identity of the organizer, who could face additional punishment.

“Another big party broke up shortly after midnight at an address in Corporation Oaks, St Ann’s and the organizer received a summons to appear in court at a later date.”

Investigations are underway to identify the organizer of the event and a driver who crashed into a police car while fleeing the scene.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Gowan said: ‘The last thing we want to do as police officers is punish people for hanging out and having fun.

“While it is encouraging that the vast majority of people clearly understand and obey the current restrictions, it is deeply disappointing that so many others needed such an expensive reminder that the rules apply equally to everyone.

“We understand this is a difficult time, but there really are no excuses for this type of behavior where people blatantly ignore restrictions in such large numbers.”

Students from all over England will be screened next week as part of the government’s plan to allow them to return home between December 3-9.
