Daniel Ricciardo criticized “Hollywood” coverage of Romain Grosjean’s fierce crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday, saying he disliked that Formula One showed endless repeats as the drivers waited for the race to restart.
Grosjean was lucky to escape alive after his Haas car smashed through metal barriers, split in two and burst into flames.
“I’m disgusted and disappointed in Formula One for showing or choosing how to show it like they did, and broadcasting replay after replay after replay of the fire, and their car was split in half,” Renault’s Ricciardo said. “And then, as if that wasn’t enough, they go on board.
“Why do we need to see this? We will compete again in an hour. Your family has to keep seeing that. All of our families have to keep seeing that … It’s really unfair. It’s not entertainment. “
Ricciardo said that Formula One, whose commercial rights are owned by US-based Liberty Media, was lucky not to have to deal with a very different story.
“Showing it like it’s something from Hollywood is not cool. Choose to do it tomorrow, but not today, ”added the Australian driver.
A Formula One spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes agreed that the replays had been unnerving.
