“There was simply no other option but to ask for it to be removed,” said an Eton College spokesman.
It came as the aftermath of the conference deepened amid reports of growing discontent over the principal’s attempts to move the school in an “aggressively awakening” direction.
Since taking office five years ago, Simon Henderson, nicknamed “Trendy Hendy,” has embarked on a 580-year-old school culture change program.
Sources say the backlash over the firing of one of Eton’s teachers after a dispute over a conference has been particularly fierce because it has highlighted a number of underlying tensions at the school.

Another source said Mr. Henderson “feels strongly” about changing the perception of Eton as an “outdated pillar of social and male elitism.”
But they added that “the general opinion is that he was wrong in this case.”
A petition, launched by current Eton students, accused the school of “institutional bullying” on the grounds that it was “gross abuse of the school’s duty to protect the freedoms of the individual.”
The petition, which had accumulated more than 1,500 signatures by Sunday night, claimed that the school had acted “ruthlessly and ruthlessly” in firing Mr. Knowland.
In an attempt to stop a growing rebellion, Henderson wrote to parents over the weekend saying he was “well aware” of their concern about the situation.
Eton College said: “The school made the reasonable request that the teacher temporarily remove it pending further discussion, but despite multiple requests and then instructions, it persistently refused to do so.
“At that stage, an internal disciplinary process was initiated and the disciplinary panel determined that the captain’s actions represented a serious offense that should result in dismissal.”
The spokesperson added that Eton College is “always saddened to see things come to such a result.”
But they reiterated that the school “had no choice in the face of clear legal advice and persistent refusal to even temporarily remove the content.”
