PHILL-ING IN
Kalvin phillips‘(£ 4.9m) getting back in shape continues to help propel Leeds on both ends of the field as they came out of Goodison Park with a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon.
Although it was an open game, with great chances for both sides, the white defensive midfielder covered every blade of grass to protect the defenders and dictate the play to follow.
Illan Meslier (£ 4.5m) should also receive a large amount of credit for Saturday’s clean sheet, contributing eight saves and walking away with a maximum bonus and a score of 11 points.
It certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed that, in the two games since Phillips returned from injury, Leeds have yet to concede. In fact, on average, Marcelo Bielsa’s men give up 1.3 goals per game with him on the wing, compared to 2.7 per game in his absence.
Considering how poor Leeds were at the back in the 4-1 losses to Leicester and Crystal Palace, the Fantasy Premier League coaches had been targeting them for safe attacking returns, but both Arsenal and Everton haven’t been able to capitalize on that in the last two Gameweeks.
The fact that Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£ 7.9m) posted just his second blank of the season at Gameweek 10 is a testament to what Leeds is capable of in terms of game management. That could be a factor influencing the debate over week 11’s captaincy when Chelsea host the Whites at Stamford Bridge.
WHITE AS A CLEAN SHEET
Leeds ‘clean sheet rally in recent weeks is definitely something Fantasy coaches should keep on their radar with the Whites’ swing at Gameweek 13.
Between then and week 16 of the game, they will face Newcastle, Burnley and West Bromwich Albion, the last two of the division’s lowest scorers this season.
While Phillips is not the type of asset to justify an investment, his presence on the team enhances the credentials of Luke ayling (£ 4.5 million), Stuart dallas (£ 4.5 million), and Ezgjan Alioski (COM)£ 4.4 million).
The former’s appeal is relatively straightforward, considering he’s Leeds’ first-choice marauding right-back.
However, Dallas and Alioski could present more explosive potential considering how Bielsa has used them in recent games.
Against Arsenal, the Northern Ireland international was deployed in central midfield with Alioski replacing on the left back. And, at Everton, Dallas returned to the left side of defense while Alioski was deployed as a left back with Jack Harrison (£ 5.5 million) tucked away in central midfield.
As Leeds’s hottest games get closer to the horizon, Fantasy managers should check out how Bielsa has been using Dallas and Alioski for a longer period.
RAPH WITH THE SMOOTH
Owners of Patrick Bamford (£ 6.1m) might be a bit concerned about his consecutive blanks after the international break, but, once again, it wasn’t from a lack of attempts against Everton.
The forward was easily Leeds’ biggest goal threat at Goodison Park, spinning and firing intelligently early on, then forcing Jordan pickford (£ 4.9m) on an excellent foot save before turning a Raphinha (5.4 million pounds) cross only to see him ruled out for offside.
Gameweek 11’s trip to Chelsea is sure to be off-putting for some, especially considering the Blues’ recent defensive improvements. But given how often Bamford likes to shoot, it makes sense to look forward to those cool accessories mentioned above.
Fantasy managers have mostly been left blank looking for a midfield attacking alternative among Leeds assets this season, but Raphinha seems to be making the case for himself.
Tips for Tom freeman In our Spot the Differential article this week, he finally delivered on his Gameweek 9 promise by scoring at Everton.
Who was unlucky enough to hit the post against Arsenal and added more threat in Gameweek 10, Raphinha is certainly one to watch out for over the next few weeks.
STICKY TOFFEES
While Leeds were certainly worthy of the win on their own attacking merits, poor Everton defense played their part on Saturday.
They face Chelsea and Leicester in two of the next three, which could genuinely sway the captaincy debate at those Gameweeks considering how helpful they are.
The Toffees entered Gameweek 10 with the second worst expected score for goals conceded (xGC) in the previous four games and matched that level of performance against Leeds.
Carlo Ancelotti kept faith in the 3-4-2-1 form he recently adopted, even with Lucas Digne (£ 6.2 million) injured for several months.
However, he made the curious decision to omit Niels Nkounkou (£ 4.0m) from the starting lineup, deploying Alex Iwobi (£ 5.9m) as a replacement for Digne on the left back.
Needless to say, this was an area Leeds ruthlessly targeted, Raphinha saw much of her success as she walked away from Iwobi’s attention with relatively little effort.
Everton XI (3-4-2-1): Pickford; Holgate (Bernard 82 ‘), Keane, Godfrey; Iwobi (A Gomes 67 ‘), Allan, Doucouré, T Davies (Delph 61’); Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin, Rodríguez.
Leeds United XI (4-1-4-1): Meslier; Dallas, Cooper, Koch, Ayling; K Phillips; Alioski, Harrison (Costa 89 ‘), Klich, Raphinha (Poveda-Ocampo 85’); Bamford (Rodrigo 90 + 1 ′).
