reOminic Raab has insisted that the prime minister is being “realistic” in his claims that the tiered system could end in nine weeks, in early February.
While the government originally suggested that the restrictions would last until Easter, Boris Johnson told Tory MPs last night that the regulations “have an end date of February 3” in an attempt to prevent a major rebellion.
When asked if the prime minister’s message should be more “realistic” from Sky’s Sophy Ridge, the foreign secretary replied: “We do, and I think it’s fair.”
He added: “We have seen the success of the vaccine through the testing process, we are not there yet, we need to make sure they are safe, but we have reached the stage where we have secured more than 350 million doses.
“We believe that by spring, we don’t know, but we believe that by spring we will be in a position to move to a completely different world because the vaccine will have been distributed to key workers and the most vulnerable, especially by age.
“The question is how do we prevent the virus from spiraling out of control and damaging lives and livelihoods and putting undue pressure on the NHS. So I think this feels like an exit strategy. And I think that comes with some reasons. wary of hope. “
