The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, has decreed three days of mourning after the death of the legendary player due to an alleged heart attack at age 60.
Maradona’s body lay in a wooden coffin bearing the blue and white national flag and an Argentine jersey with his famous number 10 at the Casa Rosada presidential palace in the capital Buenos Aires.
But first, an employee of the funeral home, supposedly one of the men in charge of preparing Maradona’s body, took a selfie with the open casket.
The owner of the funeral home, a firm called Sepelios Pinier, confirmed to local media that the worker has already been fired.
His coffin was left open for the family wake that preceded the public farewell, which began today at 6 am local time.
Maradona’s lawyer, Matías Morla, named the culprit of the sick selfie and posted a photo of him on social media on his official Twitter account as he pledged to take legal action.
“For the memory of my friend I will not rest until I pay for this aberration,” he said.
Maradona will be buried Thursday afternoon at the Jardín de Paz cemetery on the outskirts of the Argentine capital, where his parents were also buried, said his spokesman Sebastián Sanchi.
When his body was taken to the presidential palace, fans clashed with police as they rushed to get a look at the coffin of the Argentine soccer legend in Buenos Aires.
Pain and passion overflowed as heartbroken supporters broke barriers and clashed with riot police near the presidential palace.
The footage also shows hordes of tearful fans surrounding a white hearse last night as they desperately waited for a glimpse of their hero’s final journey through the capital.
Many of the mourners were crying and some were wearing the famous Argentina jersey of the World Cup winner when they gathered at the Casa Rosada.
Dozens of other jerseys from different teams dropped by crying visitors were scattered on and around the coffin.
Fans blew kisses as they passed Maradona’s wooden coffin in the main lobby of the Casa Rosada, some hitting their chests with clenched fists and shouting “Vamos Diego.”
