Wayne Rooney will take over a team for the first time when he manages Derby County for their home game against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.
The talks took place Thursday afternoon between Derby’s interim coaching staff, which includes Rooney, Liam Rosenior, Shay Given and Justin Walker.
The decision was made to abandon the plan for the coaching staff to lead the team, with Rooney taking over the lead on Saturday.
Despite Thursday’s events, the club is believed to have yet to make a decision on a long-term replacement for Phillip Cocu.
Although not confirmed, it is likely that Rooney will not play a role as either a player or a substitute in the game.
The Rams fell in a 3-0 loss to Middlesbrough on Wednesday night, with Rosenior calling the team’s performance “painful and punishing.”
Derby manager Steve McClaren, who has returned to the club for a fifth period, saw his new team fail for the ninth straight game.
Rooney: I can captain and direct Derby
Wayne Rooney has revealed he’s doing “a lot of behind-the-scenes things” since he became the main figure on a four-man interim management team in Derby.
Derby captain Rooney is currently collaborating in a quartet with coaches Liam Rosenior, Shay Given and Justin Walker to lead training and decide the team selection following the removal of Philip Cocu.
He has previously expressed his desire to take the Derby job full time, but Sky Sports News does not expect a decision to be made until the acquisition is completed by member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family, Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan.
