Diego Maradona’s personal physician was forced to apologize before his death after his family was reportedly furious with what turned out to be the last publicly released photo of him alive.

Maradona died at his home near Buenos Aires on Wednesday at the age of 60 after suffering cardiac arrest.

The Argentine legend was on the mend after undergoing emergency surgery to remove a subdural hematoma, a collection of blood between a membrane and his brain, earlier this month.

After responding well to the surgery, his doctor, Leopoldo Luque, released him to be discharged home, who shared a photo of the couple.

Maradona was seen smiling alongside Luque in an image that has circulated as the final image of Maradona alive.

According to Clarín, who gave the news of Maradona’s death, his family was unhappy with Lupue with the disclosure of the image that generated controversy.

Before his death, the doctor apologized for any discomfort caused, but insisted that he had permission from Maradona to share the image.

“I thought it was an image that would erase the other, that Diego had left on the day of the match against Patronato. Because it really is fantastic now,” Luque said at the time (via Clarín).

“I thought that this photo was going to have a very good acceptance by everyone, but it was not like that.

So I offer my apologies to those who felt offended, criticized or believed that the photo was not appropriate.

Second, the photo was agreed with Diego.

“I want to clarify that it was not my decision. It wasn’t something I decided on my own.

“Obviously, I never measured the magnitude of the photo, the dimension it was going to have.

“I have many photos with Diego. He asks me for more than I ask of him.

“Of course he does it as an act of gratitude. When I have a medical or professional gesture, he always says ‘come on, take a picture with him. Candidiasis'”.

“From now on my respects and apologies to all the people who saw this act as inappropriate.”
