The Great British Bake Off tent was silent during the final with Matt Lucas telling his co-host Noel Fielding to leave.
The Channel 4 show had come to its grand finale, but Noel found that one of his jokes fell into an abyss with the bakers and judges looking away awkwardly as the moment of ‘tumbleweed’ blew through the store.
Matt suggested that Noel take a break after his disastrous attempt to make everyone laugh before the signature baking challenge.
Little Britain star Matt, 46, told the bakers: “They did it, they are in the final and it is their last Signature challenge.
“The judges would like you to bake eight beautiful decorated custard slices.”
Matt then asked, “Noel, are you a fan of custard?”
The Mighty Boosh star, 47, responded, “I love custard. I was very upset when I heard that General Custard had died in the battle of the cream horn. “
The joke was met with silence as no one could make a laugh at Noel’s joke.
Matt chimed in and said to his co-host, “I think you should go.”
Shoulders hunched, Noel trudged as Matt continued, “You have two and a half hours. At your mark, get ready …”
“Bake,” Noel yelled off the screen as the hilarious segment came to an end.
It seemed like Laura’s trademark baking fell as flat as Noel’s joke as she had a major problem when her pastry cream didn’t harden and everything fell apart as soon as she tried to get it off the pan.
She has had a difficult time during the series and this disaster was solved by crying in the fridge.
Laura was comforted by Noel, who urged her not to give up in the final. He said, “Do you know Björn Borg, the tennis player?
“The reason he was such a good champion is that he could forget anything, so the next point was all he thought about.”
Laura came out fighting, but she fought with the Technique, a Walnut Whirl, and her dream of being crowned Bake Off Champion was in tatters.
