Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a magnificent victory at the weekend.
José Mourinho’s men took on Manchester City in north London at the start of a horrendous run of matches.
They will face Chelsea this weekend before the North London derby against Arsenal. After that there is a clash with Crystal Palace and then a game against Jurgen Klopp’s champion Liverpool.
And they got off to the best possible start.
Goals from Son Heung-Min and Giovani Lo Celso gave Spurs an impressive 2-0 victory over Pep Guardiola’s.
They did not dominate the ball throughout the game, with only 34% possession, while they also had only four shots on goal; two of them hit home and both ended up at the bottom of the net.
Still, this was a show of clinical efficiency and defensive solidity and has garnered applause throughout the game.
And former Spurs right-back Alan Hutton believes the performance was based on the discipline and efficiency of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Moussa Sissoko in midfield.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I thought tactically, they got it right. I mean, not many people stay out of town the way they did.
“Even just the two assistants, I don’t know if you noticed, the back-fours and then Hojbjerg and Sissoko, every time City attacked, they were placed in positions between the central half and the full half – back to where City used to attack. they like to catch their attackers and play one on two, they just canceled the space.
“When you have a forward like Harry Kane who can play, who can run, who can hold the ball up, bring others into the game, you always have a chance. I thought everyone in general, the whole performance was perfect, everything worked out for them.
“Defensively now, they are very good, but in the future, they have threats everywhere and right now, it must be a great place to be.”
Harry Sherlock from GIVEMESPORT says …
Sissoko and Hojbjerg gave Spurs a solid base to build on.
Throughout the game, according to WhoScored, Sissoko had a 100% tackle hit rate and made two punts.
Hojbjerg, by comparison, had an impressive 94% passing success rate, winning five of his nine tackle attempts, committing four fouls and continually looking to recycle possession.
For a team to sit down and dominate the fast break, it needs discipline in defense and in midfield and both midfielders managed to do it.
Without their contributions, the Spurs almost certainly would not have been able to win the game.
They were central to Mourinho’s master plan, and likely will be in the next two games as well, when the Spurs face their two biggest rivals in London.
