The family of a woman who died while trying to take pictures of Gwrych Castle illuminated at night has paid tribute to her.
Sharn Iona Hughes, of Prestatyn, was pronounced dead after being hit by a blue Volvo family car on the A547 Abergele Road at a location known as Middle Gate around 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 21.
The 58-year-old woman’s family spoke of her devastation and said that she had been trying to take pictures of the castle where ITV’s I’m A Celebrity … Get me out of here! is being filmed.
In a statement, they said: “Sharn passed away on November 21 at approximately 5pm on the A547 Abergele Road, while trying to see the lights at Gwrych Castle.
“Sharn was the youngest daughter of John & Gloria (née Garbutt) Bevan and was the devoted wife of Elfyn Hughes and the loving mother of Arron and Annah Hughes.
“His family and friends are shocked and perplexed by his tragic death and want to say the following about his loss.
“Sharn was very selfless and had a joyful and charitable attitude towards life.
“She was in the process of organizing the delivery of baskets to the local food bank through the Women’s Institute. We will miss her kindness forever.
Her curiosity led her to want to see the lights at Gwrych Castle, which unfortunately led to her tragic untimely death along a busy road.
“We are really heartbroken. She was hoping to take a photo and send it to a friend. We know several others will have done it and we plan to do the same.”
“We urge people to be very careful and remember that this is a very busy Class A main road.”
An old friend of the family said: “Sharn was a beacon of light, her bubbly presence will not only be missed by us, her family, but also by her colleagues, many friends, and the organizations to which she so generously gave her time, including the Gallt Melyd Church, the Gwaenysgor Choir, Trelawnyd Women’s Institute and the event coordinator Dyserth Women’s Institute. For whom it was fundamental in the organization of educational, cultural and charitable events “
A member of the WI added: “She was very active in the community, she was very generous with her time and overall generous.
“She put other people first and was a native organizer.
“She belonged to two WI, was treasurer of Gallt Melyd Church, helped organize collections for food banks, and recently finished the 5K couch with great pride.”
North Wales Police continue to appeal to witnesses or anyone with camera footage to come forward.
Highway Police Unit Sgt. Raymond Williams said: “Our thoughts remain with Sharn’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. She was clearly a much loved woman and her family now has the support of a family liaison officer.
“We continue to appeal to anyone who has witnessed the collision and has not yet come forward, or anyone who was traveling on the A547 just prior to the collision and who may have a dash cam to contact us immediately.” .
Since the tragedy, the single-carriageway’s 60 mph speed limit has been lowered to 30 mph and a detour has been cordoned off with traffic cones.
A spokeswoman for the Conwy Council said: “We are aware of the tragic incident on the A547 between Llanddulas and Abergele on Saturday night.”
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently being investigated by North Wales Police.
“It would be inappropriate to speculate on the circumstances before the police have had a chance to complete their investigations.”
