Grassroots sport is banned in England from 5 November

The ban on grassroots outdoor sports will be lifted in England when the national shutdown ends.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will make a statement to the House of Commons on Monday revealing plans for the Covid-19 restrictions starting December 2, which MPs will vote on later in the week.

While parts of the level system will be hardened, Grassroots outdoor sports are expected to be allowed at all levels.

Gyms are also configured to reopen.

While elite sports have continued behind closed doors during England’s four-week lockdown, grassroots and amateur sport has been on hold since 5 November.

That led to the closure of leisure centers and gyms, as well as other indoor and outdoor leisure facilities, including golf courses, while all grassroots football for adults and children discontinued, despite requests for exemptions from the restrictions.

Speaking about grassroots sport, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden told BBC Sport on Thursday: “I’m desperate for him to come back.

“I’m quite hopeful and confident as we get back to the tier system. It’s first on the list for us to get it back as of December 2. I know how valuable it is.”

But he added: “We have to go through a proper process of evaluating the evidence; we have to wait until the final decisions are made.”

In Scotland, Only non-contact training in grassroots football is allowed under lockout rules in areas under the most severe restrictions.
