The Red Devils achieved their first victory at Old Trafford in the Premier League this season, with Bruno Fernandes’ penalty in the second half securing all three points.
The clash was clouded by the VAR controversy, and referee David Coote overturned his own penalty shot decision after a review from the court.
Coote initially gave Slaven Bilic’s team a penalty following Bruno Fernandes’ tackle on Conor Gallagher, but later reversed his call after going to the monitor because he believed the Red Devils midfielder had touched the ball with the slightest bit.
United took the lead not long after from 12 yards when Fernandes found the back of the net from the spot on his second attempt, with West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone far from his line as he saved the Portuguese international’s first effort.
The Red Devils managed to create opportunities, but Johnstone made a series of key saves between the sticks for the Baggies.
And speaking after the game, Solskjaer admitted that his team’s industrious performance was not a “step forward” after their impressive 3-1 win at Everton before the international break.
“It’s definitely not a step up in performance,” he said at his post-game press conference.
‘We played very well against Everton last time. That’s a performance I was very happy with.
“This was well below par and sometimes three points are more important than performance, although we know that to move up the table we have to play better.
“After the international break it is not easy, there is not much time to prepare for the game.”
