José Mourinho worries that Toby Alderweireld is out in the long run with an apparent groin injury sustained in Tottenham’s win over Manchester City.
The Belgian center-back was forced to retire late in the Spurs’ 2-0 win that put them at the top of the Premier League, and was replaced by summer signing Joe Rodon; his home debut.
Alderweireld was holding his groin as he limped away and, full time, when asked if the blow was a possible long-term injury, Mourinho said. Sky sports: “I would say yes.
“I’m sorry for Toby. He did a fantastic performance, he has a major injury. It’s the fatigue injury. It’s the injury that happens.”
“But it was an opportunity for (Joe) Rodon to get into a game of this size and difficulty. So let’s go. On Thursday we have another one.”
Alderweireld had had an excellent defensive performance, as goals from Heung-Min Son and Giovani Lo Celso gave the Spurs their second consecutive home win over Pep Guardiola’s side.
Alderweireld played two full matches for Belgium during the international break, including the win over England.
Mourinho did not want to blame Belgium for the injury, but warned they were short on players for Thursday’s Europa League clash at home to Ludogorets.
“It’s bad. It’s a muscle injury to his adductor. It’s a difficult injury, sure,” he said. “In the Premier League we have three centrals. In the Europa League we don’t have Joe Rodon, so we only have two.
“But that’s the way it is. There’s no one to blame. He played in the Nations League matches his team had to win to qualify for the final four. He’s playing so well that we decided not to give him rest, of course. no one to blame, just to recover as soon as possible. “
Alderweireld himself tweeted shortly after the final whistle at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, saying: “Fantastic performance from the team / clean sheet / win today! Disappointed to sustain an injury, fingers crossed not so bad. Thanks for all the messages. “.
