Here are the Liverpool night headlines for Thursday 19 November.

The international break takes its toll on Liverpool, but an increase in injuries is possible

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will be relieved that the international break is finally over.

The two-week gap got off to the worst possible start for the Reds, as key defender Joe Gomez sustained a serious knee injury while training with England, giving Klopp a major back headache, with Virgil van Dijk already out of the game for the foreseeable future.

Soon after, news came that Mohamed Salah tested positive for coronavirus, forcing the star to move toward self-isolation and almost certainly out of containment for Saturday’s game against Leicester.

Captain Jordan Henderson followed, retired at halftime in England’s loss to Belgium and swiftly sent home, before Rhys and Neco Williams were withdrawn from England Under-21s and Wales respectively.

Here’s the full piece, with full details of Liverpool’s disabled list.

However, the latest training footage was released today, and it appears there is good news on the injury front as well.

Thiago, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson were photographed. Everyone seems to be in different stages of recovery, but it is a positive sign. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was also seen kicking a ball while continuing his rehab program.

Klopp’s rivalry with Guardiola will continue

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has agreed to sign a new two-year contract.

There were some doubts about the Catalan manager’s future at Etihad, with his current contract expiring at the end of this season. Now in his fifth season with City, he has already stayed with the club longer than in his previous stints with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

That’s certainly interesting news for Klopp, who has enjoyed a long-standing rivalry with Guardiola, first meeting the tactician when he arrived in Germany in 2013.

Under the direction of the two coaches, Liverpool and City have played some memorable fights at the top of the Premier League in recent years, finishing well ahead of the chasing group in first and second in the last two seasons.

Klopp remains hired at Anfield until 2024.

Decision annulled to name Coote for Foxes clash criticized by former referee

Former referee Mark Halsey has questioned the original decision to appoint David Coote as VAR official for Liverpool’s clash with Leicester.

The match referee was heavily criticized by Liverpool fans for failing to consider Jordan Pickford’s challenge to van Dijk worthy of a red card in last month’s Merseyside derby.

“It’s a bad designation,” he said, quoted by The independent .

“There was a huge scandal over the incident and we had two or three different reasons why it was not picked up – the offside nullified the challenge, which was silly.

“Why put it in that pressure cooker? There was no need to put him on that list of matches as VAR with Liverpool.

Coote was subsequently removed from the match, and Andre Marriner’s name appeared in his place on the official referee appointments list for this weekend’s matches.
