‘This kid is special’: fans go crazy over the ‘magic’ of Phil Foden’s awesome film against Iceland

Phil Foden had viewers in awe after his exquisite touch away from an Iceland defender during the final stages of England’s Nations League victory on Wednesday night.

The 20-year-old Manchester City star, starting in his third international game for his country, scored a brilliant double in the final 10 minutes as Gareth Southgate’s side achieved a 4-0 win at Wembley.

In the later stages of the contest, Foden was brimming with confidence and displayed his full repertoire of tricks by magnificently knocking down a fly pass on the right flank with a deft punch past the defender.

Foden turned perfectly after throwing the ball, leaving the Icelandic defender flat-footed

Then Foden sped up, before backing off on his left foot and sliding between two defenders before attempting another extravagant back heel for teammate Declan Rice.

Lead Sky sports commentator Martin Tyler said, ‘Foden, full of it now!’ before Alan Smith chimed in saying, “Lovely touch!”

Fans on social media were also in awe of the attacking midfielder, one saying, ‘This kid is special,’ and another adding, ‘Phil Foden that’s magic.

One Twitter user joked, “This is ridiculous of Phil Foden” while another said, “Take a bow, Phil Foden.”

The 20-year-old was in impressive form and scored twice when England won in the Nations League.

Foden himself was quick to praise England coach Gareth Southgate for inviting him back to the team after his fouls in Iceland two months ago.

Foden and Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood were eliminated after breaking strict Covid protocols and inviting two girls to the team’s hotel.

But the playmaker was in astonishing form Wednesday night, scoring his first with a precise shot and his second with a fierce blow from outside the area.

“To be honest, it was one of the most difficult times of my life,” Foden said of the incident in Iceland.

Foden later admitted that he was delighted to restore Gareth Southgate’s faith to him.

‘That’s the time when you need the trust of your coaches and Gareth had a lot of respect for me to play and trust me. It means everything. I am happy to pay him the goals and play well.

‘I was determined to go back and do the best I can. I was a little nervous but I really enjoyed it. My first goals for England mean a lot to me. I could not stop smiling. It was an incredible feeling.

“When you score, your confidence is high, I got the second goal well from outside the area.”
