The Scottish government has published a list of essential businesses that will be able to remain open under level four restrictions.

Nicola Sturgeon announced yesterday that 11 local authority areas in central and western Scotland will be upgraded to the highest level later this week.

Non-essential retail businesses and gyms will be among those closing for three weeks starting at 6 p.m. Friday.

Level four rules will be enforced in Glasgow, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, East Dunbartonshire, West Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, Stirling and West Lothian.

Nicola Sturgeon hopes to ease restrictions in time for the holiday period

The Prime Minister hopes that the stricter rules will allow restrictions on the coronavirus to be eased in time for the holiday period next month.

Addressing Holyrood yesterday, Sturgeon said: “Level four is meant to be short and sharp. And in this situation, it is specifically intended to have an impact before Christmas and the most challenging winter period. “

In a move similar to the national lockdown imposed in the spring, only essential stores will remain open during this period.

But the definition of “essential” has changed since then.

Government officials have listed all the places that will be allowed to remain open in the level four areas under the rules.

These include:

  • food retailers, including food markets, supermarkets, convenience stores, and corner stores
  • Unlicensed and licensed stores that sell alcohol (including breweries)
