Sony has taken over the Oxford Circus tube station in London to mark the launch of the PS5 in the UK. The marketing stunt will run for 48 hours at Oxford Circus and you will see the renowned tube station with PlayStation shapes everywhere. The walls of the metro station have changed, along with the decorative roundabouts at the four station entrances at street level.
These four inputs have the PlayStation shapes you’ll find on the PS5’s DualSense controller. Each is also steps away from the large Microsoft store in London. Tube’s rebrand also extends to London. Mile End station is now being renamed Miles End, in a nod to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Lancaster Gate is being renamed Ratchet and Clankaster Gate, Seven sisters transformed into Gran Turismo 7 Sisters and West Ham in West horizon forbidden Ham. These four Tube names are temporary, but the rebranding at these additional stations will last until December 16.
This is not the first time that Transport for London (TfL) has changed the name of tube stations to corporations. Amazon briefly changed the name from Westminster to Webminster in 2017 to mark the launch of its London data center. Canada Water Tube Station was also temporarily renamed Buxton Water for the London Marathon in 2015.
However, it is surprising to see such a large marketing effort during a nationwide shutdown in the UK. Most Londoners work from home or avoid the city as part of national restrictions to slow the spread of the coronavirus, so many will not be able to see the PlayStation forms. Sony’s rebrand comes a day before tomorrow’s PS5 launch in the UK.
