Madeleine McCann’s prime suspect has been seen being helped into an ambulance after he was allegedly beaten and left with two broken ribs.
Christian Brueckner, 43, was seen for the first time in public on Monday since German police named him the main suspect in the 2007 disappearance of the three-year-old in the Algarve.
The convicted rapist and pedophile was awaiting a court hearing on an unrelated drug offense in Braunschweig when he was allegedly attacked in cells.
He was photographed after leaving A&E in the city, where he was escorted to an ambulance by paramedics with shackles around his ankles.
Defense attorney Friedrich Fulscher claims his client was injured by court officials and will press charges, but the officers claimed Brueckner had “fallen.”

According to the Daily Mirror, a prison guard is said to have told paramedics: “Someone has been causing a disturbance there.”
A court spokesperson said: ‘The exact sequence of events is now under investigation.
“In this context, we cannot comment on the details.”
The convicted rapist and pedophile was attending court in Braunschweig, but ended up in hospital with a pair of broken ribs.
Brueckner had been driven 186 miles from his prison in Kiel to court in Braunschweig for a parole hearing on his current 21-month drug sentence.
He will have served two-thirds of his sentence in January and will be eligible for parole.
The criminal has been identified by the German police as the main suspect in the kidnapping of Madeleine in Portugal 13 years ago.
Wearing a mask, Brueckner was ushered to the back of the courthouse Monday flanked by police officers.
Forty minutes later, paramedics hastily removed him after his “fall.”
The prosecution opposes his parole due to the pending investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance.
The three-year-old girl was abducted from her family’s vacation apartment in Praia da Luz, in the popular Algarve region.
German prosecutors say they have “concrete evidence” that the little boy is dead and are convinced that Brueckner was behind the infamous case.
They said Brueckner, who has prior child abuse and rape convictions, was known to be in the Algarve the year Madeleine disappeared.
Maddie McCann disappeared after checking into her family’s hotel room at a resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2007.
Detectives say the phone data proves that Brueckner was near the Praia da Luz complex when Madeleine disappeared, but they have yet to reveal “irrefutable evidence” showing that he is the one who took her.
When asked last month if forensic evidence can locate Brueckner inside the apartment where Madeleine disappeared, he said: ‘I have an answer, but we have decided not to release this information.
‘I can’t say’ yes’ or ‘no’ as that would bring up a thousand more questions and I can’t go into details.
But you have to believe me when I say we have more evidence.
“Here in Germany, our Public Ministry only discloses things when they are solid.”
But last week, Portuguese police accused German cops of having no proof that Brueckner kidnapped Madeleine, according to a leaked memo.

Judicial Police officers said they were “shocked” after being briefed on the German case against Brueckner, adding that “there is no evidence, only speculation.”
Portuguese detectives believe that the accusations against Brueckner are designed to “keep him in prison at all costs” and accused their German counterparts of failing to carry out a serious investigation.
The extraordinary claims were contained in a memorandum prepared by the Portuguese police after meeting with detectives and investigators from the German BKA of Scotland Yard.
A leaked copy of the memo was shown to The Sun, in which a Portuguese official wrote: ‘There is no evidence, only speculation.
“When I read the German case, I was shocked. I never thought the BKA would investigate so badly.
‘The meeting was to get the sense of the situation, the BKA wants to investigate the other two cases of possible sexual harassment, so that the suspect does not get out of prison until the end of the year and they leave the suspect.
“It is not a serious and objective investigation, but only to keep the suspect in prison at all costs.”
Portuguese police have been accused of spoiling the investigation, including the theory that Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Jerry, were responsible.

Goncalo Amaral was fired for his handling of the investigation and the McCanns successfully sued him after pushing the theory that they were responsible in a book.
Hans Christian Wolters, the prosecutor leading the German case, was forced to admit last month that the evidence they have gathered is not strong enough to charge Brueckner.
He added that they are “a witness” to obtain the evidence they need, but so far no one has come forward.
Brueckner has previously said he is innocent of any crime involving the four-year-old.
