Mouthwash could become a vital part of people’s daily routine after laboratory tests found that it can kill the coronavirus in 30 seconds.
Initial results from a non-peer-reviewed Cardiff University study showed “promising signs” that mouthwashes containing at least 0.07 percent ketipyridinium chloride (CPC) are capable of fighting the virus.
The scientists carried out tests in the university laboratory by mimicking the conditions of a person’s naso / oropharyngeal passage and using mouthwash brands such as Dentyl.
Their report, titled “The Virucidal Efficacy of Mouthwash Components Against SARS-CoV-2 In Vitro,” has not yet been peer-reviewed, but supports another study published last week that found that mouthwashes based in CPC are effective in reducing Covid viral load.
Next, a clinical trial will examine how effective over-the-counter mouthwash is in reducing levels of Covid-19 in the saliva of coronavirus patients at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. The results are expected to be released in early 2021.
Dentyl is the only UK mouthwash brand to have participated in the 12-week clinical trial, led by Professor David Thomas from Cardiff University.
Dr Thomas told the PA news agency: “While this in vitro study is very encouraging and a positive step, more clinical research is now clearly needed.
“We need to understand whether the effect of OTC mouthwashes on the Covid-19 virus achieved in the laboratory can be replicated in patients, and we hope to complete our clinical trial in early 2021.”
Dr Nick Claydon, a specialist periodontologist, said he believed the research was “very valuable.”
He added: “If these positive results are reflected in the Cardiff University clinical trial, CPC-based mouthwashes like the Dentyl used in the in vitro study could become an important addition to people’s routine, along with with hand washing, physical distancing and the use of masks. ” both now and in the future. ”
