Prince Charles was pressured to propose to his second cousin, Amanda Knatchbull, according to royal experts. But Ms Knatchbull turned down the Prince of Wales’ offer because she did not want to indulge in a “system”.
In Robert Lacey’s book Battle of Brothers, he explains how Prince Charles’s great-uncle Lord Mountbatten pushed the prince to marry Mrs. Knatchbull.
She was the cousin of Prince Charles and the granddaughter of Lord Mountbatten.
The actual author, Mr Lacey, said that the Prince of Wales admitted to being “well known” to Ms Knatchbull.
Mr. Lacey wrote: “Over the years, the two cousins became close, developing a mutual respect and friendship that has lasted to this day.
“But when the prince finally made his proposal in the summer of 1979, shortly before the assassination of Lord Mountbatten by the IRA, the independent-minded Amanda politely rejected it.”
Ms. Knatchbull’s refusal to marry Prince Charles had an impact on the prospect of the prince’s marriage in the Royal Family.
Lacey wrote: “‘Surrendering oneself to a system,’ he explained, was so absolute when he joined the royal family, it involved a loss of independence ‘far greater than marriage usually invites.’
His move only confirmed Prince Charles’s “own belief that getting married at the House of Windsor was a sacrifice that no one should make,” according to author Jonathan Dimbleby.

“He had just broken up with his girlfriend, and his friend Mountbatten had just been murdered.
“I said it would be good to see him. I wasn’t that impressed. “
Princess Diana and Prince Charles were married in July 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
Royal photographer Kent Gavin spoke about the couple’s most positive moments before their divorce.
In Royalty Close Up: The Photography of Kent Gavin, he said: “You have to remember and remember that there were happy moments with Charles and Diana, they were very much in love.
“The honeymoon photos – there was a look of love on both of them.
“That photo [Charles kissing Diana’s hand] just captured everything that fairytale wedding was about.
“And there were times, again, after that, where you just thought that marriage and this family had it all, and these images prove it.
“They really were wonderful days. Of course, people tend to think about the bad days due to divorce and everything went wrong, but if you look back at all those photos we took in the early days, it tells a different story. “
Diana and Prince Charles divorced in 1996 before the princess tragically died in a car accident the following year.
