Brexit News: George Eustice rejects Simon Coveney’s ultimatum as no deal is coming up | Politics | News

Environment Secretary George Eustice refused to give in to the EU’s demands in an incredible on-air moment. This morning, Simon Coveney said that the EU will not reach a trade deal if the UK tries to restore clauses in the internal market bill that violate the law. When confronted, Mr. Eustice rejected this ultimatum from the EU and insisted that the government would re-impose those measures.

Mr. Eustice responded: “We will postpone those measures. They are very important.”

Sky News anchor Sophy Ridge replied: “Simon Coveney just told me that there is absolutely unanimous opinion that if the UK decides to violate international law, why would the EU agree to a deal?

“You said you will try to reinstate those parts of the domestic market bill, so should we assume there is no deal?”

Eustice played down this as an EU hoax, saying the controversial parts of the bill “will not be necessary” if a deal is reached.

In his previous interview, Coveney told Ms Ridge that there is “no way for the EU to ratify the deal” if the UK reimposes the measures.

Ridge tweeted a video of Mr. Coveney giving the ultimatum, adding: “And immediately afterward, George Eustice tells me that this is what the government intends to do …”

The clauses of the bill were removed by the House of Lords earlier this week.

Eustice said he agreed with Coveney that this week is crucial if a Brexit deal is to be reached on time.

He attacked Brussels for refusing to give in on fishing demands, saying they want “eternal access” to our waters.
