AWelcome to our coverage for the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, from Intercity Istanbul Park, about 30 miles or more outside of Istanbul. Yesterday’s qualifying session was brilliantly dramatic, with heavy rain during the first part of the session. It took two red flags and 70 minutes to complete and start Q2, which was quite a bit.
There was a bit more drama in Q2, but it was in the final qualifying that the real excitement happened, with the rain stopping and the track drying out. The crossover between fully wet tires, which were definitely necessary for the previous two sessions, was coming and Racing Point was early in the change and it paid off.
After Sergio perez was on provisional pole for much of the third quarter, Walk Lance hooked it towards the end to get it out of first place. Only Max verstappen – who had been the best in each of the previous five sessions – was the only man behind him and could only finish three tenths away. Riding on pole for the first time in his career – it was an amazing and enjoyable sight to see someone other than Valtteri Bottas (9th) or Lewis Hamilton (6th) on pole position for once this year.
