Kell Brook was knocked down and then stopped by Terence Crawford within four rounds of their WBO welterweight title fight in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

A Crawford right hook sent Brook spiraling towards the ropes, before the champion clinically and quickly closed the show by landing a series of punches.

Brook was fighting for an all-time great British result on foreign shores, but instead Crawford delivered a demonstration of why he is considered one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world.

“Never in my career has anyone done that to me in sparring or anything,” Brook said.

“They caught me with a shot that I didn’t see. I’m devastated because no one could have put me in better condition.”

Brook had traveled to the US in 2014 to dethrone an undefeated American champion in Shawn Porter for the IBF belt but, six years later, he was in Las Vegas without coach Dominic Ingle or promoter Eddie Hearn.

In his corner was Spanish coach Carlos Formento whom Brook had met on Instagram.

It also came amid questions about the two broken orbital bones suffered in losses to Gennadiy Golovkin and Crawford’s rival Errol Spence Jr.

But the first three rounds were encouraging for Brook of Sheffield.

He was winning on two of the three judges’ scorecards, but his hope eroded in a brutal flash.

Crawford landed a flush right hook from his southpaw stance, only the ropes holding Brook up, so the referee ruled a takedown.

Crawford’s final instincts took over and he hit Brook with more punches until the referee stopped.

Now he has stopped eight straight opponents within range, including Brook’s rival Amir Khan, and has extended his undefeated record to 37-0 with 28 KOs.

Spence Jr, the IBF and WBC champion, risks his titles against Danny Garcia next month.

But Crawford said of his next fight: “I already said who I love. I want Manny Pacquiao. [who holds the WBA belt].

“I want to revisit that fight. That was a fight that should have happened right now.

“But since the pandemic happened, and they weren’t going to let the fans in the Middle East, they had to stop that.

“Everything was 95 percent done. We had the place. The money was almost there. It wasn’t quite there. That was all we were waiting for.

“Kell is a tremendous talent. He came in and tried to take my title. He was in shape. He made the weight. There were no excuses to put him on the table. He came off three wins.”

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said: “Terence Crawford proved, once again, why he is the best welterweight in the world.

“It was a commanding performance over a very good fighter at Kell Brook. Terence ranks there with all the great welterweights I’ve promoted.”
