Terence Crawford defeated Kell Brook to retain his WBO welterweight title.
The result is Brook’s third career loss, after losing to Gennady Golovkin and Errol Spence Jr.
Brook came off the blocks well, with much success coming from his lead jab as both men came out with an orthodox stance. The Sheffield man managed to keep the distance well, keeping the usual slow start at Crawford to a minimum, and took the first two rounds.
Crawford’s eye began to swell midway through the second round as Brook had continued the success, but his experience and skill in the ring saw him switch to southpaw, taking the jab off him.
The third saw Crawford become much more aggressive, closing the gap and landing combinations for which Brook had no answer, and it was early in the fourth that Brook asked, “What happened there?”
Crawford landed a short right hand that rattled Brook and sent him crashing into the ropes, saving him from falling to the mat. The referee gave him a standing count before one of the sport’s top finishers did what he does best, close out the show.
Next up for Crawford, in his eyes and in the eyes of promoter Bob Arum, will be Manny Pacquaio in the Middle East. The fight everyone wants is Errol Spence, but Nebraskan has earned a fight against a legend in the sport.
Because of Kell Brook? A return to Sheffield and maybe a conversation or two with Eddie Hearn.
