Lance Stroll’s first pole position in F1 has been confirmed by the Turkish GP stewards after the Racing Point driver was acquitted in a post-qualifying investigation on yellow flags.

Stewards checked the standings to see if Stroll had slowed down enough for the yellow flags to fly just once in the final minutes of his pole-winning Q3 when his teammate Sergio Perez went off the track at turn seven. .

But after speaking with Stroll and evaluating Racing Point’s telemetry data, they ruled that the Canadian had followed the regulations.

“By telemetry, Car 18 clearly came off the gas, slid into the corner and then accelerated when it was released from the incident,” a statement from the stewards reads.

“The sector times do not clearly show this, as the track was drying out quickly and each lap was faster than the previous lap.”

McLaren’s Lando Norris, who qualified 11th on a disappointing Saturday for the British team, also faced the stewards for an alleged yellow flag infraction in Q1 when Nicholas Latifi spun off at Williams.

The commissioners have yet to comment on that incident.

Sainz sanctioned for blocking Pérez

Meanwhile, in a new investigation Saturday night, stewards gave McLaren’s Carlos Sainz a three-place drop off the grid for hindering Racing Point’s Sergio Perez during Q2.

The penalty leaves Sainz 16th on Sunday’s grid.

The commissioners ruled: “Car 55 [Sainz] I was coming out of the pits like car 11 [Perez] it passed through Turn 1. Car 11 caught up with car 55 at Turn 2/3 and car 55 prevented it unnecessarily at that point and in several subsequent turns.

“While the extraordinary track conditions clearly affected the situation, the team’s radio communications clearly warned Car 55 that Car 11 was behind it.”

Sainz also had a penalty point added to his super license, a first for the Spaniard in the last 12 months.
