Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has spoken for the first time since sustaining a serious knee injury while on duty in England.

Gomez suffered a torn patella tendon while training alone at the Tres Leones base on Wednesday.

He underwent surgery and returned to Liverpool to begin his journey back to top form, with the club confirming that he will face a “significant” period on the sidelines.

The 23-year-old has suffered severe knee and ankle injuries in the past and said he is well aware of “what it takes” to recover from them in a message to Liverpool fans on social media.

Liverpool confirmed on Thursday that Gomez’s surgery was a success and there is hope that he may show up before the end of the season.

“The problem was isolated in the Gomez tendon, with no damage to any other associated knee ligaments,” the Reds wrote in a statement.

“The operation to correct the damage, which took place in London on Thursday morning, was a success and the 23-year-old will make a full recovery.

“Gomez will begin a rehabilitation program with the Reds medical team immediately, with club staff carefully monitoring his progress.

“There is no time scale set for his return, although the issue is likely to rule him out for a significant part of the remainder of 2020-21.”
