A man was arrested on suspicion of murder after a two-year-old injured girl was killed in an incident in New Marske.
The girl was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after emergency services were called to a townhouse in Dale Street, New Marske on Tuesday morning.
The girl, who can now be named as Grace Thorpe of New Marske, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment, where she sadly passed away on Thursday.
Cleveland police said Grace’s family is being supported by specially trained officers.
Police began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding how the girl was injured Tuesday and a 26-year-old man was arrested.
The man, who has now been arrested on suspicion of murder, remains in police custody.
Police remained outside the home Thursday while investigations continue.
Lead Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Peter Carr, said: “While the loss of a life is tragic, the loss of a child is particularly devastating and Grace’s family is understandably distraught. Our thoughts remain with Grace’s family and all those affected by her loss.
“We are working hard to establish all the circumstances that led to his death and we have a dedicated team of officers on the case. We know that Grace’s death will have a huge impact on the community.
“We have officials in the local area and anyone who wants to talk to someone can approach the team.
“We also urge people to be aware of what they post on social media, particularly when it comes to speculation. This is an active legal case and we have someone in police custody.
“Please be aware of the impact any comment could have on Grace’s case and family during this extremely difficult time.”
The news has shocked the entire New Marske community and beyond, with many urging others to “Put Your Facebook Pink” in memory of the girl.
Police vehicles, including Crime Scene Investigation units, remained at the scene since Tuesday, with a cordon at the rear of the property.
A post mortem examination is expected to take place on Thursday. Details on the nature and type of Grace’s injuries have not yet been released.
Emergency services were called to Dale Street at 9.47 am on Tuesday.
The air ambulance helicopter landed in a field, closely followed by two road ambulances.
The girl was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, but the doctors were unable to save her.
Neighbors were shocked by the news and many people have expressed their regret on social media after learning of the girl’s death.
One woman said, “I woke up to the worst news of my life. I held my baby tighter last night and will continue to do so every day.”
Another wrote: “Rest in peace girl, hold your babies tight, you never realize how precious time is.”
And another urged others to pay tribute to the girl and support the family.
“Let’s make Facebook pink to remember a beautiful little princess Grace.
“Rest in peace, beautiful girl.
“It wasn’t your time. Fly high with those beautiful angels.
“What a cruel and horrible world this is. Hold your babies a little tighter.”
