Two men were arrested on suspicion of terrorist offenses after their car was stopped at Pall Mall in central London, police said.
The couple, both 34 and from the east London, were seen acting suspiciously in a car in Westminster around 12.10 a.m. Thursday and were stopped by armed officers at Pall Mall, the Metropolitan Police said.
They were arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Law and taken to a police station where they are still being held.
No weapons were fired and an anti-terrorist investigation was launched, the force added.
The level of terror in the UK was increased from “substantial” to “serious” last week after the attacks in France Y Austria, which means that an attack on British soil is now considered “very likely”.
The head of the Met’s counterterrorism command, Commander Richard Smith, said: “Every day, police officers patrol the capital, observing suspicious behavior and detaining people they suspect may be involved in crime.
“Following the rise in the threat level of terrorism in the UK last week, as a precautionary measure, I would like to emphasize that the public should be alert but not alarmed.”
