Users started reporting problems shortly after midnight UK time, according to Down Detector, which monitors whether or not a site is working. According to its live map, the problem was reported all over the world, in Europe and the US, but also in South America, Australia and Southeast Asia.

YouTube said: “If you are having trouble watching YouTube videos right now, you are not alone; our team is aware of the problem and is working to fix it.”

The website itself appeared to load correctly, with the search bar and video thumbnails working normally.

However, when a video was clicked, the buffer wheel would spin indefinitely and the video would refuse to load.

The YouTube team tweeted about an hour after the outage began: “… And we’re back, we’re very sorry for the outage.

“This was fixed across all YouTube devices and services, thank you for being patient with us.”

The video-sharing platform did not elaborate on what may have caused the service disruption.

YouTube is said to be one of the most visited websites in the world, second only to Google.

Google itself bought YouTube in 2006 in a deal worth $ 1.65 billion.

According to Statista, more than 500 hours of video was uploaded to the platform every minute as of May 2019.
