It’s still almost a couple of years away, but plans are already being made for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
The May holiday weekend in 2022 will be moved to Thursday June 2, with another holiday on Friday June 3 to mark Her Majesty’s 70th anniversary as monarch.
It will be the first time a British sovereign has reached the historic milestone.
The events will take place over the four-day weekend to reflect on the Queen’s reign and its impact on the UK and the world since 1952.
The commemorations are being jointly organized by The Royal Household and the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee will be a truly historic moment and one that deserves a celebration to remember.
“We can all look forward to a special four-day Jubilee weekend, where we will present a spectacular show, one of a kind in a generation, blending the best of British ceremonial splendor with state-of-the-art art and technology.
“It will unite the entire nation and the Commonwealth in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s reign.”
Organizers say the four-day celebrations will feature events that mix British ceremonial pomp with cutting-edge art and technology displays.
To ensure that the entire country and the Commonwealth feel involved, it has been promised that “spectacular moments in London and other major cities will be complemented by events in communities across the UK and Commonwealth, allowing people to come together to celebrate and give thanks on a national and local level. “
A platinum jubilee medal will be produced for people working in public service, including representatives of the Armed Forces, emergency services and the prison service. The tradition dates back to the reign of Queen Victoria, when an official medal was designed to commemorate her 50th anniversary on the throne.
