England manager Gareth Southgate responded to Liverpool defender Joe Gomez’s injury, calling it “annoying” and “painful”.

Gomez picked up a knee injury while training with the national team today.

He has since been removed from the England squad to have his injury scanned.

It is believed to be a “serious” knee injury, although it is not yet clear if it involves his anterior cruciate ligament.

Speaking after the incident, Southgate said: “I can’t tell you how serious it is because the scans haven’t been done yet.

“What was disturbing was seeing that he was in a bit of pain and the fact that there was no one around him when the injury happened, so I didn’t like that element.”

When asked if the injury could be a problem with his ACL, Southgate replied: “We have to wait and see what the scans show and we are all hopeful that it is not what it could be.

“It is not a good situation. I don’t see him involved in games with us, that’s for sure.

“My immediate thoughts are with him because he has had some difficulties with injuries in the past, so we hope as long as we can and pray that it is not long term.

“Joe is a good example. We know the burden he’s had on the last six weeks, so we gave him and the guys who had been involved in European games one more day of recovery and yet something like that happened. “

The news is devastating for Gomez and his Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp.

It means Joel Matip is now the only senior center-back on Klopp’s team, following the injuries of Virgil Van Dijk and Fabinho.

Van Dijk is expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery.

Fabinho was injured against FC Midtjylland in the Champions League.

The first game Liverpool will have to negotiate after this is against Leicester on Saturday 21 November.
