Injuries to Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk Put Great Stress on Liverpool Squad, Says Jamie Redknapp | Football news

Joe Gomez, joining Virgil van Dijk on Liverpool’s disabled list, will put a lot of stress on the rest of the team, Jamie Redknapp told the Pitch to Post podcast.

Gomez has retired from England’s last squad after injuring his knee in training, although how serious it could be has yet to be announced.

It’s another injury setback for Premier League champion Liverpool, who lost Virgil van Dijk to a long-term knee injury in October, and has seen MPs Joel Matip and Fabinho come in and out of the squad with punches in the last matches.

Speaking on the latest Pitch to Post podcast ahead of the November Internationals, Sky sports Expert Redknapp says the pressure will now mount on an already depleted Liverpool, drawing on his own injury experiences with England.

He said: “I am choked by Joe Gomez if it is a serious injury. He is a young man who has already had knee injuries and has come back brilliantly. I am a big fan of his, he seems a very good, down. to the player of the land.

“I remember seeing him many years ago playing for Charlton in the FA Youth Cup and thinking ‘this is a star of the future’ and he certainly has shown it in Liverpool. I just hope it is nothing too serious.

“From England’s point of view, it’s a disappointment for Gareth Southgate, but for Jurgen Klopp, if this is long term and you don’t have Virgil, and you don’t have Joe Gomez, that puts a huge amount of stress on this team. a team that were red-hot favorites earlier in the year.

Rob Dorsett reports after Gomez sustained a potentially serious injury during England training on Wednesday morning.

“It’s certainly going to turn things around and for everyone else involved, the two backs have been so impressive at times. It hasn’t been easy without Virgil right now, but without Virgil and without Gomez they will make it even more difficult.

“I suffered injuries playing for England and it is really difficult to deal with that because you are so proud to be there, but you also know that it is costing you an enormous amount of time in your career.”

“I broke my ankle twice playing for England, I broke my hamstring playing for England, it cost me an enormous amount of time. Of course you wouldn’t trade it for the world, but there is something so frustrating because it should be. Most prominent to play for your country, but when you come back injured it’s frustrating for everyone.

England manager Gareth Southgate says it is too early to speculate on the extent of the injury Gomez suffered in training.

“Right now Liverpool need Joe. I thought he was unlucky with the penalty decision [against Man City] but his form has been really good and he seems like a real leader.

“When you have someone like Van Dijk who is so instrumental and leads from the front, sometimes you can afford to hide behind someone so it’s so great but without Virgil, everyone else has to step up and become in leaders.

“I’m sure we were going to see Joe impress even more than before because of the pressure that maybe was on him and you get even more serious about your business because you can’t trust the Van Dijk colossus.”

The question now will be what Liverpool could do in the winter transfer window, which opens on January 2, if Gomez joins Van Dijk with a long layoff.

But Redknapp doesn’t think it’s easy to sign a quality defender.

He added to the Pitch to Post podcast: “It’s tough. I’ve heard people say they have to go out and get a really big signing because Virgil is going to get injured, but if he goes through rehab right to get in shape, he won’t be too far from it. come back maybe in March or April as a guess, normally it’s six or seven months, he’s an incredibly fit guy and he’ll be a good healer.

“You don’t want to bring someone in just for the sake of paying £ 40 million or £ 50 million because you know someone will come back very quickly. But if you lost Gomez as well, you are certainly looking to get into the market and try to bring someone. in January or as quickly as possible, whether it be a loan, or a transfer, but it will not be easy to get players.

“Your hands are tied to a certain point because right away everyone knows that you are desperate so prices are going to inflate. Liverpool have worked so well in the market, they have not always bought from the big stars, Virgil has done being the opposite, they paid £ 75 million for him, but what would his fee be now, maybe three times more because he is an amazing player.

“Defenders are a rare commodity because there are not many good guys who can play like Virgil, who can defend like Joe Gomez, who is still a young man. I really hope it’s weeks instead of months, but I don’t like rumors that they’re leaving the team. “
