A north London police station was evacuated after a car crashed into the front of the building and a man set the road on fire.

The incident – in Edmonton – has been declared a “major incident,” said local MP Kate Osamor.

Met Police said a car “collided with the station office” at 6.58 pm and that a man had been detained.

“The vehicle remains in place,” said a statement.

“Specialist officers are present while it is being examined. At this time we have not been informed of any injuries.

“London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade are present.

“The police station has been evacuated and there is a large police cordon.”

The video shows a man on the road next to a bus stop: he pours liquid onto the track before setting it on fire, creating flames about three to four meters long.

Several officers arrive and quickly throw him to the ground and arrest him.

Another video shows the police car stopping, with officers yelling “stay back” as they pin the suspect to the pavement.

An officer rushes to get a fire extinguisher out of the car and puts out the fire.

Sky’s home affairs correspondent Mark White said: “There is a real concern that this may have been a deliberate incident … Nothing official to suggest that it is the line of investigation at this time, but of course in the Last week we have risen to a serious threat level following the terrorist attacks in France and Austria. “
