More than 44,000 people have come forward to get tested for the coronavirus as part of Liverpool’s mass testing operation.
Mayor Joe Anderson today confirmed that the total number of new lateral flow tests performed since the pilot program began in the city on Friday lunchtime is 44,233.
And he said that of that number, 249 people have been found to be positive for the coronavirus.
That is, 249 people who had no symptoms and who otherwise would not have been likely to be tested.
The city leader also gave information on when people should get tested a second time.
On Twitter he said: “Busy in all our test centers today, the total of tests at 12.00 pm today 44,233,220 positive.
“Please take the test and if you have thanks. Please wait a week and take the test again, let’s do it for our family, our community and our city.”

Speaking to ECHO, he said he expected the massive test operation to continue throughout the month of November.
He said: “We need to wear the whole month while we are locked up to break the chain of transmission.
“We have already located 220 people who have the virus and did not know they had it.
“Those people are now going to isolate themselves and not pass it on to hundreds more people in the city, so this is clearly helping us control the virus.
“We need as many people as possible to show up to be tested, and if you’ve already been tested, you need to get tested again.”
The latest figures come as new research suggests that the lateral flow tests offered in Liverpool are effective at locating the virus in people.
Scientific analysis has indicated that the tests can produce results in less than half an hour without the need for laboratory equipment and have been shown to have a specificity greater than 99.6%, the Department of Health and Social Care said.
The evaluation said they are suitable for use in the community, including for testing asymptomatic people who show no signs of coronavirus infection.
Sir John Bell, Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford, said: “The data in this validation report demonstrates that these inexpensive and user-friendly tests can play an important role in our fight against Covid-19.
“They identify those who are likely to spread the disease and when used routinely in mass testing could reduce transmissions by 90%.
“They will detect diseases in large numbers of people who have never been tested before.”
