A man who reportedly pointed a firearm at children outside a school today was shot by police with rubber bullets.

The students were locked up in a school and ‘told to stay away from windows’ when armed policemen swooped on the scene near Rawlins Academy in Quorn, Leicestershire.

Officers said the man was armed with a long-barreled firearm and reportedly “targeted children and shouted threats at passersby.”

The 50-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with the intent to endanger life, police confirmed.

A spokesperson confirmed that the children were locked in their classrooms for a “short period of time” but have since been allowed out.

One person tweeted: ‘My son is locked in a room and they tell him to stay away from the windows.’

A local told Leicestershire Live: ‘There was some screaming in the street and I looked outside.

‘There was a man with a bare top who was carrying what appeared to be a rifle, I have no idea if it was an air rifle or a real pistol.

“ He was pointing at people and yelling threats. At one point, the guy was pointing the rifle at the Co-op store, but staff managed to close the doors to protect customers.

Leicestershire Police said: “ Officers were called today at 12.04pm for a report of a man in possession of a long-barreled firearm in the Sarson Street area, Quorn.

The man was reportedly walking through the area and was reported to have pointed the gun at people in the area, including children.

‘In the interests of public safety and officers, firearms officers were deployed to the scene. During the incident, officers fired a less lethal bullet at the man.

The man was searched by the East Midands Ambulance Service. He was reported to have suffered bruises on his arm. No other injuries are reported to have occurred at this time.

The man, 50, of Quorn, has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with the intent to endanger life. He is currently in police custody.
