Boris Johnson has risked being red-faced after his congratulatory message to President-elect Joe Biden was found to contain traces of Donald Trump’s name.
On Saturday, the prime minister congratulated Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris for vice president after they were declared the winners of the US election.
In a graphic attached to his Twitter post, Johnson said in a statement: “Congratulations to Joe Biden on his election as President of the United States and to Kamala Harris on his historic achievement.
“The United States is our most important ally and I look forward to working closely on our shared priorities, from climate change to trade to security.”
However, it has since been observed that altering the brightness and contrast of the graph reveals the outline of what appears to be an earlier statement.
Above the word “Biden” you can see the word “Trump”, while you can also find the outlines of other words.
A government spokesman said: “Unsurprisingly, two statements were prepared in advance on the outcome of this very close election.”
“A technical error meant that parts of the alternate message were embedded in the background of the graphic.”
SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford posted on Twitter: “Incompetence has become the watchword of this conservative government.
“This just serves as another reminder of @ BorisJohnson’s close relationship with Trump, which has done so much damage.”
Trump has yet to admit defeat in the US presidential election and has repeatedly claimed that he “won” the election.
It has also made unfounded allegations of fraud in the electoral process.
