DualSense Controller PS5 PlayStation 5

Have you ever wondered why the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller doesn’t have the usual blue, red, green and pink colors on its front buttons? The X, Circle, Triangle and Square buttons are synonymous with the PlayStation brand, having appeared on all Sony controllers from the start. In addition to those famous shapes, buttons have always been that color-coded, up to PS5, of course.

So why are they all grayed out in the new controller? PlayStation Senior Art Director Yujin Morisawa offers a simple explanation in an interview with the Washington Post.

“Yes, except in the special editions, we have always used those colors,” he tells the publication. “For PlayStation 5, we tried to eliminate what was already there. I wanted to simplify it and make it universal,” says Morisawa.

He adds that the forms themselves “already [show] what will be the button “, and that the colors are not really necessary, hence the solution of a note on PS5.

While we love the colored buttons, we’ve also gotten used to seeing the simple gray versions at this point. On the mostly white PS5 platform, it looks the best fit aesthetically. But who knows; perhaps Sony will bring back the colored shapes when it introduces alternative color drivers in the future. Do you like monochrome front buttons or do you prefer that they keep their colors? Tell us in the comment section below.
