Alan Shearer is also ‘sure’ Liverpool or Manchester City will win the Premier League this season despite early challenges from Tottenham, Leicester and Chelsea.

Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester have won their last three matches to climb to the top of the Premier League table before the second international break of the season.

The Foxes are one point ahead of Jose Mourinho’s Spurs and defending champion Liverpool, with Southampton and Chelsea also a short distance from first place.

Manchester City, which won the Premier League in 2017-18 and 2018-19, are currently only 11th place, but held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad on Sunday.

Shearer has welcomed the unpredictability of this season, but says he hopes Liverpool and Man City will break away from the chasing group and play another close title race.

He wrote in a column for BBC Sport: ‘I still see Liverpool and Manchester City as the top teams in the Premier League and I think one of them will win the title, but Leicester and Tottenham might have something to say about it.

‘Southampton also spent some time at the top of the table over the weekend and it’s quite refreshing to see a few different teams up there. It certainly keeps things interesting and is something that could last a bit longer as well.

“The highlight of this season is how unpredictable it has been compared to previous years. All teams have had at least one bad day.

That makes it exciting, and I don’t see it changing anytime soon, partly due to the intense schedule and the number of injuries clubs will have to face, which is becoming another common theme.

Liverpool can still terrify teams when they advance and like Manchester City they won’t be leaving anytime soon.

“This season can be unpredictable, but one of them will finish it as champion, of that I am sure.”

Meanwhile, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane hopes Liverpool will defend their Premier League title.

Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered an embarrassing 8-2 loss to Aston Villa earlier in the season but have recovered in recent weeks.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Man City, Keane told Sky Sports: ‘We know the quality of Liverpool, but I look at the body language, mentality and hunger of the teams that have won the league, and what I see a lot in this Liverpool team.

“ I still think it will take a lot to stop Liverpool. I know they are not at their best, but they are getting results. ”
