Emotional footage shows Joe Biden hugging his grandson by the grave of his late son Beau on his first full day as president-elect.
After a gigantic vote count that lasted more than four days, the former senator was finally announced as the winner of a close election campaign, ousting incumbent leader Donald Trump.
But the 77-year-old Democrat spent the next day as he does most Sundays, attending morning mass with his family at St. Joseph’s Church in Brandywine, Wilmington, Delaware.
Biden was a little late for the 10:30 a.m. service and left early, as he usually does, to make sure that Secret Service agents didn’t interrupt other attendees.
However, there was a large press meeting waiting outside for his arrival.
The new commander in chief of the United States was joined by his daughter Ashley and his 14-year-old grandson Hunter, who had congratulated him on stage on his victory speech the day before.
As they left the church, the three Bidens visited Beau Biden’s grave.
Biden bowed his head in tribute to his late son, a former Delaware attorney general, often touted as a future president, who died of brain cancer at age 46 in 2015.
The president-elect had mentioned Beau in his victory speech before reciting his son’s favorite Catholic hymn, “On Eagle’s Wings.”
“In the last days of the campaign, I’ve been thinking of an anthem that means a lot to me and my family, particularly my late son Beau,” said Biden.
“It captures the faith that sustains me and that I believe sustains America,” Biden said.
“And I hope I can bring some comfort and comfort to the more than 230,000 families who have lost a loved one to this terrible virus this year,” he continued, turning his attention to the coronavirus pandemic.
“My heart goes out to each and every one of you. May this hymn give you comfort too.
Biden and his advisers were working Sunday on plans to address the crises facing a divided America, the pandemic first, a day after the Democrat won enough states to take over the U.S. presidency.
Republican Trump, the first U.S. president to lose a re-election bid in 28 years, showed no sign of budging, instead pursuing legal fights challenging the outcome.
Leading Republicans in Congress had also failed to acknowledge Biden’s victory, in a sign of the party-laden atmosphere he will face when he takes office on January 20, though some members of Trump’s party and a bipartisan group focused on the transition urged the president to cooperate.
Biden delivered a message of unity and conciliation in a speech in his home state of Delaware on Saturday, saying it was “time to heal” the nation.
