The police watchdog has said it is investigating the death of a man who was shot by officers called to reports of an argument on a street.
The 57-year-old man died in an ambulance early Sunday morning after the incident in Swindon.
Wiltshire police officers were responding to reports of two men arguing, the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) said.
He is now investigating the incident independently.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to all those affected by this terrible incident,” the watchdog said in a statement, adding that its investigators have attended the scene.
“It is mandatory for us to conduct an independent investigation when the police fatally shoot a member of the public,” the statement continued.
“We have established protocols with the police to ensure that our investigations do not impede their ability to conduct inquiries as part of their related investigations.”
Wiltshire Police confirmed that a referral had been made to the IOPC regarding the death of a member of the public.
The force added in a statement: “The IOPC is independently investigating this incident, so it would be inappropriate for us to comment further on it.
“However, we would like to assure the public that there is no risk to the community at large and that there is likely to be an increased police presence in the area for a considerable time.”
