Major crime scene in place after man shot dead in Swindon incident

A man has been shot and killed on a quiet residential street in Swindon this morning.

Emergency services were on the scene in Rodbourne around 2 am, and local residents claimed they heard loud banging and screaming before ambulances arrived.

Following the alleged shooting, there is a significant cordon at the crime scene on Summers Street, with the road closed between Rodbourne Road and Morrison Street. All adjacent alleys and trails have been taped up, guarded by officers.

Paramedics were seen giving CPR to a casualty in the back of an ambulance, but it was later confirmed that he passed away.

Inside the crime scene, there appears to be a police Armed Response Vehicle (ARV), a navy blue BMW X5 believed to have been involved in the shooting.

Several local residents say they heard screams, screams and “loud pounding” before blue lights flooded the street in the early hours.

Summers Street is expected to be cordoned off as a crime scene for the next 24 hours as detectives investigate the incident alongside the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), a watchdog that investigates all shootings involved by police.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “We can confirm that following an incident on Summers Street, Swindon, shortly after 2 am this morning (11/08) a referral has been made to the Independent Office of Police Conduct ( IOPC).

“It is about the death of a member of the public.

“The IOPC is investigating this incident independently, so it would be inappropriate for us to comment further on it.

“However, we would like to assure the public that there is no risk to the community at large and that there is likely to be an increased police presence in the area for a considerable time.”
