‘Full of energy, intelligence and love’: the family’s heartbreaking tribute to the 16-year-old boy, stabbed to death on Manchester Street

The family of the 16-year-old who was stabbed to death on a Manchester street has paid tribute to a “remarkable” young man.

Alexander John Soyoye, known as “John”, was mortally wounded after an altercation in Moston on Thursday night.

His heartbroken family described him as “full of energy … intelligent, loving and friendly.”

Police were called to Birchenall Street at 7 pm and despite the best efforts of paramedics, the young man died at the scene.

Now a police chief has made an urgent appeal for witnesses to come forward.

They are not treating the attack as random, but are trying to piece together why the ruck took place.


An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The suspect was arrested after going to the hospital with his own stab wounds. He remains in the hospital.

Detectives launched a murder investigation and the investigation is ongoing.

At this time, several men armed with weapons are believed to have been involved in an altercation.

In a statement, his family said: “He was an extraordinary man who was full of energy, intelligence and love. His energy was felt by all who knew him.

“He was smart, loving and friendly and we will miss him, but they will remember him.”

The detectives are again appealing to the public for information and have launched a Major Incidents Public Portal and are urging members of the public to submit any information that may help them with their inquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Clitherow of GMP’s Senior Investigation Team said: “First of all, we want to express our deepest condolences to the family of this young man who has been tragically killed.

“All our thoughts are with them as they try to come to terms with this devastating loss and we have a dedicated team of officers around them to support them.

“Our investigation is progressing, but we urge the public to contact the police if they believe they have information that could assist us in our investigations. We believe this has been a targeted attack and we trust that there are people who know what happened or know the identity of those involved.

“Any information could be vital to our investigation, so do the right thing and submit the information through the Public Major Incident Portal.
