UK weather forecast: Met Office warning as thick fog shrouds Britain amid sub-zero freeze

This morning, heavy fog is covering parts of Britain and the Met Office issued a weather advisory urging motorists to take extra precautions.

Overnight through Friday, temperatures plummeted below freezing as November’s big freeze continues amid fears of early winter, while scattered rains will continue through the end of week.

Southern England, including London, are likely to remain dense with fog until mid-morning, as are large swaths of the northeast from Nottingham to Newcastle.

The Environment Agency continues to issue flood warnings, with three in effect for today, along with 13 alerts, following rainy days earlier in the week.

Met Office warns of thick fog in north and south

However, Meteorological Office forecaster Aidan McGivern has assured that “sunlight will develop quite a lot” once the fog lifts and the day progresses, before temperatures reach 16 ° C on Sunday.

He said: “Heavy fog … lingering for much of the morning, parts of the Midlands, North East England, some other patches elsewhere.

“In some places, the fog may not disappear until the early afternoon and that will suppress the temperatures in those areas, so it will feel chilly where the fog remains.

The fog will lift by midmorning

“But otherwise, for much of the country, it is a mostly sunny Friday with temperatures climbing back to double figures,” he added.

Tonight you will see a breeze bringing medium-high level clouds across the south east of England, which could bring some light showers.

Then, overnight through Saturday, it returns to widespread frost, with temperatures plummeting to 1 ° C in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Belfast, while the Midlands and Newcastle will see 2 ° C and London will only hit highs of 4 ° C, according to weather charts.

Temperatures remain on the temperate side and drop to around zero overnight

And while Saturday is expected to be a mix of sun and clouds, and the high pressure means rain is unlikely, a persistent breeze from the south will make the country feel softer.

Sunday sees a “greater likelihood of torrential rains coming from the southwest,” McGivern added.

UK 5 day weather forecast

Early clouds and patches of fog and low clouds rising and clearing in most areas, although slowly for some parts of North East England perhaps with fog all day. Otherwise fine and dry but windy in the southwest.

Tonight:

A cold night for many with some patches of fog and mist developing again, especially in the North East and East of England. Some more widespread clouds and fogs develop over the south of the UK.

Saturday:

Many areas are fine and dry once the early fog clears, albeit slowly for some. Parts of Wales, the Midlands and southern England will be cloudier and, for some, misty.

Outlook from Sunday to Tuesday:

Often cloudy and dull, with erratic rains and showers in the western areas at times. The best of any gloss is likely to be found in areas located north of high ground.
