A polling place in Arizona was forced to close after an overseas protest by Trump supporters raised concerns.
CNN reports that some in the crowd outside the building in Maricopa County are armed (Arizona, which has 11 electoral votes, is an open-access state).
By the time the center was closed to both the public and the press, Joe Biden was ahead in the state by approximately 70,000 votes. The count continues, but the press was escorted out of the building.
A tweet from the Maricopa County Elections Department read: “The Elections Department staff at @maricopacounty will continue our work, which is to administer elections in the second largest voting jurisdiction in the county. We will post the results again tonight as per as planned. We thank the (sheriff’s office) for doing their job, so we can do ours. “
Fox News has called the state and it is 11 electoral votes for Democrat Joe Biden, but the count continues and there could be only a few thousand votes.
Officials will electronically broadcast the vote count, but the media have been told to leave.
An NBC reporter at the scene, Gadi Schwartz, tweeted: “We have left the Maricopa Elections Center. The staff there say they have NOT been evacuated and will remain there until the results are released.”
“Having said that, when our team left, the crowd of protesters claiming that the vote was being stolen from the president had gotten bigger and louder.”
In Arizona, supporters have been spreading the false story that ballots that were completed with a Sharpie pen were rejected.
The states keep counting:
- Alaska
- Arizona
- Georgia
- North Carolina
- Nevada
-
Pennsylvania
The Fox News decision table was the first outlet to call Arizona for the Democratic candidate with 73% of the votes counted.
It was the first ‘turn’ of the election – the first state to take the opposite path from four years ago when Trump defeated Hillary Clinton. Since then, Wisconsin and Michigan have opted for Biden after voting for Trump in 2016.
When Fox News called the state, the Trump campaign reacted with fury, according to Vanity Fair and the New York Times.
A source told Vanity Fair that Trump himself called Fox owner Rupert Murdoch to yell at the call and demand a retraction. Murdoch declined and the call went through.
As Donald Trump’s chances of reelection became increasingly unlikely, he frequently criticized editorial calls made by Fox News, seen largely as a Republican spokesman.
Trump supporters in Arizona have yelled ‘Fox News sucks!’ for much of the night.
Trump, his campaign surrogates and adult children have attempted to undermine the American electoral process, prematurely claiming they had won Pennsylvania and alleging fraud without any evidence.
Lawsuits have been filed in battle states like Georgia as Trump’s path to re-election narrows.
