When a global pandemic led to postal ballots becoming the backbone of this presidential election, no one could really imagine how key they would be.
With eight states yet to declare a winner, the uncounted votes in each could really make the difference between a Trump or Biden White House.
This table shows the number of votes left to be counted on each one, and in some cases, margins are crucial.
In Pennsylvania – always touted as the state that could achieve the result for one or the other candidate – statistics show that Donald Trump has a current advantage of around half a million votes.
However, even though only about 20% of the votes remain to be counted, they total more than 1.4 million, leaving a good opportunity for Joe Biden to change the status.
And with 20 polling station votes up for grabs, ballots that have yet to be opened or are still in mailboxes could really make a difference there, as well as the final total.
The scope for a change in outcome on these crucial ballots without counting is enormous.
